He was ranked higher than Russell Westbrook in high school.
So what happened? He'll tell you exactly.

The Strategist
The Hooper
Jack Appleby was ranked higher than Russell Westbrook in high school. He'd like you to know that. He'd also like you to know that he is currently 36 years old, a former Division III college player, and a social media strategist who has spent the better part of the last three years doing everything in his power to convince himself, and a rapidly growing audience, that his athletic days are not behind him.
The content he built around that refusal (How to Hoop Forever, an Instagram and TikTok account that launched in 2023 with no plan and broke a million views on its third post) has now crossed 20 million total plays. He describes himself as "the worst business owner of all time." The numbers suggest otherwise.
"I was ranked higher than Russell Westbrook in high school… so what happened? Why am I not an NBA All-Star? This video explains everything."

Jack Appleby spent 15 years building social strategy for Microsoft, Beats By Dre, Verizon, Twitch, and Spotify. He directed creative strategy for campaigns that moved culture. He ran Future Social, a newsletter that grew to 70,000 subscribers and became one of the most-read publications in marketing. He knows exactly how content is built. And he chose to use all of that knowledge on the most authentic thing he had: the game he never stopped playing.
The strategic sophistication he'd spent 15 years developing went directly into the format. Every major How to Hoop Forever series is built like television: compelling premise, clear stakes, episodic documentation, narrative payoff. The Chicago Bulls 3v3 tournament with creator teams: over a million plays. Building and funding a professional basketball team ("It's a five-digit number"): 604,000 plays. Can a rec team average 100 points per game: 492,000 plays. A 400-person $1,000 game of Knockout: 1.3 million plays. Structure is doing that. Not just personality.
"Hit my 1-year mark as a basketball content creator.
The numbers are kind of insane.
Taking this to the next level."

The FIBA 3x3 content tells you what the brand has become. The professional team Jack built (assembled, funded, coached, and documented from scratch) competed in Bangkok, Thailand. He got stranded there when flights cancelled. He documented that too. He moved the team to the German 3x3 Super League. He competed in FIBA 3x3 invitational events. Each arc drives roughly 10,000 new followers.
Before flying to Thailand for his pro basketball debut, he went to SwishHouseFit in New York to get extra work in. "8 days til my Thailand Pro Basketball debut! Took myself over to @swishhousefitnyc to get some extra work in. Keep following to see if I'm too washed for pro hoops." He wasn't too washed. He scored or assisted on every point in that first 3x3 game.
The Global Arc
He also does this at 6am before work: "Ball is life. That's the only time for me to get on the court, so we're at @swishhousefitnyc before work." That's the Eighth Day, lived without naming it. The pursuit carved out of every available hour because the alternative is unacceptable.
"Basketball at 6am? Ball is life. That's the only time for me to get on the court."
Jack Appleby
Jack Appleby played 103 games at Hope International University, third-most in program history. That was over a decade ago. The game could have been the past. He decided it was the present.
How to Hoop Forever isn't a nostalgia brand. It's an argument (made in real time, documented on video, validated by actual competitive results) that you don't have to stop. That the game can keep going if you're willing to keep going with it. That the person who was ranked higher than Russell Westbrook in high school can still be a story worth following at 36.
The rec team might break up. The flights might get cancelled. The games might be in Bangkok or Bochum or Brooklyn at 6am. Doesn't matter. Keep hooping.
